From behind the lens and the podium: A journey of pursuing passions after the nest empties

After your children have flew the coup, the days can feel both exhilarating and overwhelming.

When that happened to me 2 years ago, I said to myself; “It’s a time to explore new interests, reconnect with old hobbies, and dive into activities that make me enjoy each day” this thought  led to a surprising adventure—taking a photography class and joining a public speaking group and starting my own business.  What began as a simple exploration became a profound path of self-discovery and happy days.

Rediscovering Creativity Through Photography

For years, I was focused on supporting my husband's military career and raising our kids, but now I could shift my attention back to myself. And just like that I was enrolled in a photography class at my local community college, this step felt like setting myself free. Suddenly, the world around me looked way different through the lens of my camera. Each click of the shutter was not just a snapshot but a reminder to take time and enjoy the scenery around me.

I learned to see things, small things, things I might have overlooked before—from the intricate details of blooming flowers to the expressive faces of people walking by. I even discovered that photography can lower stress levels by 64% according to research by the University of Westminster.

Every weekend has turned into a mini-adventure, with my camera by my side. I captured stunning sunsets, local events, and the bustling energy of different neighborhoods. The transformative power of photography became apparent. It allowed me to express emotions that words sometimes failed to convey.

Moreover, this creative journey introduced me to new friends who shared the same aspiration to create. We bonded over our struggles and milestones. What began as individual pursuits blossomed into a supportive community that inspired growth and confidence.

Finding My Voice in Public Speaking

Despite my joy in photography, a persistent fear lingered—public speaking. Growing up, I always avoided it, but now, with my children becoming independent, I felt a strong desire to share my stories and experiences. So, I took a leap and enrolled in a public speaking class.

The first class was nerve-wracking, the rest of my peers were 15-20 yrs younger than me,  I prepared for judgment and criticism, but instead, I found a nurturing space filled with others aiming to conquer their fears. Each session taught me not just the skills of speaking but how to communicate authentically.

My favorite lesson was the power of storytelling. I learned that sharing a own story can pull an audience in, making them feel connected. I began to weave in my experiences as a military wife, discussing the challenges we faced and the triumphs we achieved together, my journey of self discovery through photography and how it affected my self esteem. With each project, my confidence grew. By the end of the course, I was able to give my first public talk about the transformative experience of the choices I have made, now that my nest is empty. Standing at the podium, I felt empowered and proud.

Following My Dreams and Embracing Fear

Pursuing photography and public speaking was not just about gaining new skills; it was a journey of overcoming fear and stepping beyond my comfort zone. Moments of doubt and uncertainty were common, but signing up for these classes helped me remember the importance of taking risks.

Diving into these new passions taught me to welcome vulnerability and embrace the unknown. It’s completely natural to feel scared; what matters is having the courage to take the first step.

This self-discovery journey showed me that life continues to be vibrant at any age or stage. Whether you're a military spouse or newly freed nest parent, it's never too late to chase your passions. Here are two ways to get started:

  1. Explore Creativity: Want to paint? Sign up for an art class. Have an urge to write? Start that blog you've been dreaming about.
  2. Educate Yourself: Attend workshops or online webinars for subjects that intrigue you. It can lead to incredible changes and open doors you never thought possible.

Embrace New Chapters

The experience of taking a photography class and engaging in public speaking illustrated what it meant for me to reclaim my voice and passions. It’s a journey of courage, community, and creativity. The fear of judgment has faded and been replaced by a renewed sense strenght.

If you find yourself hesitating to pursue something new, remember that it’s never too late. Diving into your interests not only enhances your own life but can inspire those around you.

Let your story unfold with every click of your camera and every word spoken aloud. Now is the time to create, share, and shine!
